Tasmania is the first destination that I've visited since post pandemic. Famed for its cleanliest air and renowned delicacies, Tasmania is ridiculously gorgeous. Our 9 days trip started from Hobart, one of the main city (the other city is Launceston) -->Bruny Island --> Port Arthur--> Buckland-->Launceston-->Cradle Mountain-->Stanley-->Forthside--> Freycinet-->Hobart. The main objective of this trip is to immerse ourselves in nature as much as possible. I can't wait to see the greenery, do some hiking and breathe in the world's cleanliest air.
Hobart Airport
We flew from Singapore, transited at Melbourne and flew to Hobart. The airport is pretty small as expected of an island domestic airport. Notwithstanding so, it is spacious enough to handle the crowd. Oh yes, not to mention, the skyline of Tasmania is so beautiful. After picking up our luggage, we were greeted by the staff from YesDrive who drove us to pick up our rented car, some 10 mins away from the airport. I recommended YesDrive as their prices are pretty reasonable as compared to other car rentals. Car rental can be quite pricey at Tasmania. Hence, it is good to compare the prices across different car rentals before deciding which car rental to go with.
Getting to Bruny Island is pretty easy. First, we drove to Kettering, which is approximately 40mins from Hobart, bought the ferry ticket onsite and drove onboard the ferry to the island. Pretty cool! The ferry ride lasted for 20 mins and we can get out of the car to enjoy the cool breeze and awesome scenery.
We were totally famished and decided to have lunch at this highly raved Bruny Island Cheese Company. Bruny Island Cheese Co. is an artisan cheese maker founded by Nick Haddow. Their cheese are all made and matured using traditional techniques and are some of the finest artisan cheeses made in Australia.
We ordered the cheese platter for two which was super nice. I really love the cheese as it tasted so fresh and went so well with the bread. What really surprised me are the pickles. They tasted so well with the bread and cheese. Lunch was excellent coupled with great outdoor ambience and fabulous weather!
Next, we headed for The Neck . You definitely cannot miss this place. The spectacular view from the top shares a bittersweet comparison between the gushing waves from the Pacific Ocean on the left and the calm water on the right. I would say that this is probably the main highlight of Bruny Island. Of course, taking a picture at this iconic flight of stair is a must before I enjoy my afternoon walk around the area.
Next, we headed all the way to Bruny lighthouse which is approximately 50 mins from the Neck. The drive to the lightshouse can be pretty bumpy on gravel road with numerous potholes. The historic Cape Bruny lighthouse was built in 1836, located in the Southern Tasmania. It towers over spectacular dolerite cliffs of Cape Bruny and offers panoramic views of the ruggered South Bruny coastline.
By the time we arrived at the lighthouse, it was almost 5pm and the gate to the carpark will close at 5pm. Hence, we quickly took a quick stroll around the surrounding without walking up the path to the lighthouse. It would be pretty nice to walk further and get a glimpse of the lighthouse and the stunning coastline.
We were mindful that the last ferry leaving the island at 7.15pm and drove non-stop to the pier. Within 20mins, we were back to the Kettering and headed back to our hotel for restful night. On our way back, it started raining and we made a quick stop at Elizabeth Quay to grab some fish&chips at Flipper. I must say that the portion of the chips was huge and they tasted delicious. The grilled salmon on the other had was over-grilled and tasted too dry. Hence, my recommendation is to just go for the fish&chips.
For our hotel stay, we recommend Quest Trinity in Hobart (which is quite near Elizabeth Quay). The apartment is cosy and surrounded with a beautiful rose garden. While the design of the room was not elaborate, it was however equipped with all the necessary amenities such as microwave, kettle, bed warmer, TV and sparkling clean bathroom. Most importantly, the apartment is value for money.
