Day 6: Grindelwald and Jungfraujoch Top of Europe

We woke up to a pleasant day with perfect weather. It was no longer rainy and instead rays of sunshine brightened up the entire  town of Grindelwald. The view was perfect right from the moment I opened my room's window.

Before I continue with my blog on our journey for the day, let me introduce you to our cosy accommodation in Grindelwald, Hotel Lauberhorn, located within a short distance from the main train station. If you are too lazy to walk, fret not because there are buses available from the train station to reach the hotel. What I really like about this hotel is the bright and cheery exterior, well decorated outdoor garden and lounge, lift in the hotel to reach your rooms (this was indeed a surprise) and lastly very nice view of the mountain coupled with yummy croissants for breakfast.

We had a corner room to ourselves without any balcony because the hotel was fully booked during our visit. The room was sparkly clean with modern bathroom facilities and even a heater. The hotel staff were very friendly and the owner of the hotel also offer personal paragliding activity that takes off right from the snow mountain. How thrilling. Nevertheless, we did not have the time to engage in paragliding as were going up to the Top of Europe.

Anyway, let me show you pictures of Hotel Lauberhorn, highly recommended at affordable price (P.S. hotels in Grindelwald can be quite expensive).

Grindelwald is a very small town with very little shopping but plenty of mountain view. It is a nice place for walks at anytime of the day and a great base for you to ascend to the peak of Jungfraujoch.

After a nice breakfast, we headed off to Jungfraujoch - Top of Europe. It's really impressive how modern days engineering allow us to ascend the peak via cogwheel train. To be honest, this is the first train ride ever where I can enjoy the breathtaking and panoramic scenic view of both the farmlands and the majestic mountains.

Some brief facts about Jungfraujoch:
  • It is an alphine attraction and viewing point, at an altitude of 3454m.
  • It is located between mountains of Monch and Jungfrau, in the heart of the UNESCO Natural Work Heritage property "Jungfrau-Aletsch-Bietschorn".
  • The only way to get there is via train.
  • The train station is the highest one in Europe.

It is quite easy to get to the destination from Grindelwald. Just follow the crowd or check with the staff at the train station for direction. You simply cannot miss this highlight. Anyway, here's the link for getting to Jungfraujoch:  https://www.myswissalps.com/jungfraujoch/gettingthere

The amazing Top of Europe experience begins from the moment we boarded the cogwheel train. The train then entered a long tunnel through the mountains, It stopped twice on the way up the tunnel - once at Eigerwant and then at Eismeer. The tunnel trip lasted about 45 mins as we can feel the steep ascend. At last, we reached the Top. Cool refreshing air greeted us as we stepped out. Pure white landscape that seemed to transport us to Christmas season.I was joyous and definitely excited to explore the mountain range and have fun rolling on the silky snow and fancy some snow ball fights!

Other than the spectacular snowy landscape, Jungfraujoch has lots of other activities for the visitors. It's really a fun place at the top. Outside, be expected to be spoil with choices of activities such as snow tubing, sledging, skiing, snowboarding and a panoramic view from Sphinx observatory. Within the enclosure, we can choose to have a warm meal at the restaurant or freeze ourselves at the Ice Palace. For the kids, they will be thrilled to visit the Lindt Swiss Chocolate Paradise.

As we descend and reach the transit train terminal to Grindelwald, we decided to fill  our stomach with a plate of delicious rosti and sausage.

Here we are back to Grindelwald as we continued for our next adventure at Pingstegg, where we enjoyed ourselves with the mountain slide or otherwise know as the toboggan.

Cute cable car took us up to Pingstegg

Nice view as we headed upwards

I can watch the world go by ....

so fun that I ride 6 times

Mauritius, An Island of Emotion

Mauritius, is an island nation in the Indian Ocean off the southeast coast of the African continent. Together with my Diva friend, we travelled to Mauritius in 2014 for our first ever girls trip or what we called as our "Elephant & Hippo Honeymoon". Although Mauritius is an island, the entire island is at least twice bigger than Singapore. Flights to Mauritius are somewhat limited. The airlines that flew to Mauritius include Air Mauritius, Emirates, British Airway and Air France. From Singapore, it took about 10 hours to reach Mauritius, including an hour transit at KL. Despite the long haul flight, I would say Mauritius is worth the visit at least once in your lifetime. I'm glad to have traveled with my Diva friend to this exotic place. Jeju, an island of love and romance Day 2

From its summery island beaches to its statuesque Hallasan Mountain, verdant O'Sulloc green tea fields, and its iconic Sunrise Peak @ Seongsan IIchubang, Jeju Island is an icon in South Korea. Not forgetting the famous Jeju tangerine, a citrus fruit lauded across Jeju island at large. Hence, we decided to go to a local tangerine farm to find out.  I couldn't quite remember the name of the tangerine farm but it took us quite some time to locate it. The farm was near a neighborhood where every household grew their own tangerine trees at their yard/garden. It was quite a sight as this was my first time seeing a tangerine tree.  Anyway, if you like oranges and the idea of trampling through the orchards in search of that perfect fruit, then you've got to come during the tangerine season (which is like from November onwards). Tangerine picking in my opinion is quite an inexpensive activity in Jeju. We googled this tangerine farm not far from the city where tourists and...

Mauritius, An Island Of Emotion @ Chamarel, Black River Gorges and great Seafood lunch

1. Seven Coloured Earth @ Charamel The Seven Coloured Earth is a geological formation and prominent tourist attraction found in the Chamarel Plain of Riviere Noire District in South-western Mauritius. How interesting!   It is in fact a relatively small area of sand dunes comprising sand of seven distinct colours (i.e. red, brown, violet, green, blue, purple and yellow). In fact, the colours are dependent on the sunlight. The main feature of the place is that since these differently coloured sands spontaneously settle in different layers, dunes acquire a surrealistic, striped colouring. At the entrance of the Seven Coloured Earth, there is this beautiful Chamarel Waterfall. Although this is not the most magnificent waterfall that I've seen, this waterfall is the highest in Mauritius.
